Marvel Studios is currently preparing its The Fantastic Four reboot for a November 2024 release after two previous attempts by Fox to adapt Marvel’s First Family for the big screen. With production slated to begin next year, research is underway to find the right cast and crew to bring popular heroes to the MCU.
There has been a fierce discussion about which actors are best suited for the four main roles, but one of the hardest chairs to fill is that of the director. Spider-Man: No Coming Home director Jon Watts was originally tasked with tackling the reboot, until he left the project to take a break from the superhero genre.
Over the past few months, names such as John Krasinski, Peyton Reed and Steven Spielberg have all been pitched to lead The Fantastic Four. Rumors had it that Marvel Studios was considering a familiar face to direct its biggest reboot yet, and now it looks like a decision has been made.
The director of Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four
According to The Direct’s sources, Wanda Vision director Matt Shakman is hired to lead Marvel Studios The Fantastic Four, in theaters November 8, 2024.
Shakman will replace Spider Man director Jon Watts at the helm following his departure from the project in April 2022.
While Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to confirm Shakman’s alleged involvement, Marvel CCO Kevin Feige may make it official during the studio’s D23 Expo presentation on Saturday, September 10.
Why Matt Shakman Directs Fantastic Four
After Watts’ departure The Fantastic FourMarvel Studios has reportedly started pursuing a “great mix of candidates” for the highly anticipated reboot, including some big-name directors. This decision stemmed from Feige’s desire to avoid having to oversee production, much as he was able to when leaving Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the expert hands of Sam Raimi.
The reboot would have been “easily Marvel’s best Open Directing Assignment (ODA),” with Marvel Studios taking its time for the decision. One of Deadline’s sources claimed they would “to be shocked if a choice is made before Labor Day”, which does not take place for almost two weeks on September 5. The director recruited weeks before that date would indicate that the studio was quickly convinced that Shakman was the right choice for The Fantastic Four.
Shakman has already proven his talent with Wanda Vision delivering one of the MCU’s most popular Disney+ series, and clearly, Feige was equally impressed. The reality-bending sitcom was ultimately about family, and since The Fantastic Four are Marvel’s first family, Shakman seems like a clear fit.
The Wanda Vision the director has largely a television background, having also tackled episodes of It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, game of thronesand Succession. Shakman has clearly made an impact on Hollywood after his first job with Marvel Studios, as the filmmaker is also expected to direct star trek 4 and that of Apple godzilla and the titans.
The star trek The sequel was originally slated to begin production this spring, but has yet to roll cameras, indicating development delays. Nonetheless, Shakman should have his schedule open to begin filming. The Fantastic Four next year in time for the 2024 release which will launch phase 6.
The Fantastic Four hits theaters on November 8, 2024.
