“I told him that I was fed up with my reputation as a ‘dabang’. I’m fed up with this reputation that only gets me into unnecessary trouble. I asked him to suggest a character who would be the most shy of the four roles. The kind who does everything after asking her husband, whether it’s getting out of the house or cooking.

“It’s something I’ve never done in my life, because obviously I don’t have a husband, and I didn’t even ask my father for permission for it. So I had the opportunity to do something that I had never done in my life. He’s a beautiful character,” Swara Bhasker said while launching the trailer for her film Jahaan Chaar Yaar.

Supported by producer Vinod Bachchan, Jahaan Chaar Yaar follows four middle-class women who, to break the monotony of their lives, go to Goa. “Little do they know that an array of thrills and twists and turns await them in the party capital,” reads the film’s official synopsis. The film also stars Shikha Talsania, Meher Vij and Pooja Chopra.

Swara Bhasker said that while she loved playing empowered and fearless women on screen, she felt like breaking the mold and trying something new with Jahaan Chaar Yaar.

“I like the characters of ‘dabang’. My character in Tanu Weds Manu was a vocal and opinionated woman. Even the one in Raanjhanaa had a lot of personality. In Nil Battey Sannata there was a strong mother while Anaarkali in Aarah had a fiery character, even Veere Di Wedding presented a fearless woman, who lives on her own terms.

“As an actor, you want to do new things. Every role is an apprenticeship. If I don’t learn, it will affect my performance. I won’t be able to do anything new and my craft would stagnate. Shivangi is someone one that I’ve never played before,” she added.

Jahaan Chaar Yaar is set to hit theaters on September 16. At the event, Swara Bhasker was asked about the growing concern that films are not performing at the box office. The actress said she views the current situation positively, where films in all languages manage to click with audiences.

“I don’t agree that movies don’t work. A hype was created around him. Movies work. Films in all languages are doing well. We should look at it positively. Interestingly, even dubbed movies work, which is fantastic. I don’t think movies don’t work.

“We put them in brackets in Tamil, Telugu… Why? These are stories that people will watch. Definitely the weather has changed, which is not bad. Change is good. The taste of the public has diversified. They don’t think it’s Tamil or Telugu or Hindi anymore. They look at it holistically and find content. There can be no better thing than this for the entertainment industry,” she added.
