With every new remake movie debuting in theaters and winning [false] praise or miserable reviews, there’s one more that I’m happy to report is solid and avoided a remake [fail]: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. We, Jalopnik, celebrated the movie’s sweet 16th anniversary with a little tribute (and I had a little existential crisis for the rest of the day). In the weeks that followed, I came across a few nuggets related to or coinciding with comedy, including the one we’re talking about today.

During promotional press tours and obligations of Talladega NightsWill Ferrell and John C. Reilly, were guests for the famous Larry King Live on CNN. But the actors were not there as themselves. No, they appeared as Ricky Bobby and his best friend, Cal Naughton, Jr. Already, it’s a weird setup, and it’s getting better from there.

King goes on to ask Bobby (Farrell) about his challenge to drivers in Talladega Nights, and goes on to play a response from Dale Earnhardt Jr., taken at the film’s premiere, where he calls Bobby a “fruitcake ” and that everyone saw their mental breakdown coming. Earnhardt Jr. calls on the show later to roast Bobby. King also takes a call from the kingRichard Small.

I can’t say if it’s fully scripted, but it looks like a solid 45 minutes of improvisation from the comedy duo, asking what they would do in politics, and a terrible joke between Iraq and an IROC, all rolled up around a teaser scenes of the film for the actual promotion. It’s brilliant.

While I never want to see this movie remade, I would love to see older Bobby and Naughton Jr. get back on the track, or do some retirement racing in IMSA or something.
