While some people are still reeling from the Prime Minister ofAmazon reminds us — with its latest trailer for — that HBO doesn’t have the only big-budget fantasy series.
The trailer is just over two minutes long and shows Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark. We get a better understanding of her motivations on the show and see her building her own community.
It opens with the death of one of Galadriel’s brothers.
“My brother gave his life hunting the enemy,” Galadriel said. “His task is now mine.”
From there, we see various other races of Middle-earth, including humans, dwarves, and. We see them battling foes and traversing all sorts of landscapes, like snow-capped mountains and dark woods, as well as storm-laden seas.
The series is set in the Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Even with that time slot, however, Lord of the Rings fans will recognize character names like Elrond, Isildur, and Sauron.
Although the names are familiar, Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, who helped oversee the series’ development, told German fan site Deutsche Tolkien that Tolkien’s domain would only allow the series to be set in the Second Age, according to the Guardian. This means we won’t see any Third Age events, when The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place.
The domain also insisted that the “main form” of the Second Age should not be altered. Major events cannot be changed, but new characters and events can be added as long as they don’t contradict anything Tolkien said or wrote.
