Marvel Announces Monica Rambeau Comic Book Miniseries

Variant cover of Dark Ages #5 featuring Monica Rambeau.

Following his appearance on Wanda Vision played by Teyonah Paris, and before her next jump to the cinema in 2023 Wonders, Monique Rambeau is now given a bigger push in the comics. Besides being one of the members of the new, Reformed Thunderbolts, she is now set to receive her own comic book miniseries. The recently announced Monica Rambeau: Photon by Eve Ewing (Stone heart) and Michael Sta. Married (Red X-Men), will mark the first time the character has headlined a comic book on her own.

Monica was created in 1982 by John Romita Jr. and Roger Stern in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16. Although Carol Danvers has been codenamed Captain Marvel for a decade now, Monica had the title in her very first appearance and she’s the second Captain Marvel overall. The five-issue series will see Monica face an “shattering crisis” that she will have to face alone, and that journey would unfold through space and time. In a Press release at Marvel, Ewing talked about the feeling of taking Monica on this new journey. “It’s such an honor to take on the story of a legacy character like Monica Rambeau. Monica’s character has a long history in the Marvel Universe, but she’s behind the times to have her own story told.

Over the decades, Monica has been a recurring cast member in Marvel comics and has gone by many codenames, including Spectrum, Photon, and Pulsar. She has often been an Avenger, most notably as the leader of the Mighty Avengers in Al Ewing and Greg Land’s 2013 series of the same name, and as a member of Ewing and Kenneth Rocafort. Ultimate series from 2016. But they’re all team-up titles, with the closest thing to solo stories being a pair of one-off titles from the late Dwayne McDuffie and Mark D. Bright in the ’90s. Following in McDuffie’s footsteps , Ewing called it a privilege. “I’m thrilled to tell the story in a way that both highlights her incredible cosmic abilities as well as her daily, relatable struggles.”
