Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence to direct – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: The long-awaited feature film adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise BioShock seems to be growing considerably. Sources tell Deadline that Netflix exploited hunger games director Francis Lawrence to direct the picture, with Michael Green adapting the screenplay.

The directing and writing assignment was among the most sought-after jobs in the industry after Netflix said in February it was teaming up with video game holding company Take-Two Interactive and its publishing subsidiary of 2K games to produce a BioShock film. Since then, the studio and its partners have been aiming high for who would help guide this project given the expanse of ownership, scouting top directors and writers for the job.

The studio has been high on Lawrence since the spring as someone who has shown an ability to adapt popular IP into global hits. An example is what he did for the hunger games franchise after Gary Ross left the show after directing the first film. This franchise became a success; Lawrence has since returned to direct the prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents which is currently in production and will premiere in 2023.

Since Lawrence is filming this, the plan is for Green to adapt the BioShock script and, once Lawrence is complete, it can move into pre-production.

Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the BioShock The video game series blends sci-fi and horror to ask unique existential and societal questions reshaping the way gaming stories are told, all amidst heart-pounding action gameplay that rewards precise shots, clever planning and deadly improvisation. The award-winning franchise first introduced by 2K in 2007 has sold over 39 million copies worldwide across original releases of titles including BioShock, BioShock 2 and Bioshock Infiniteas well as several reissues, remastered editions and bundled collections.

Roy Lee will produce the film through his Vertigo Entertainment with Lawrence for about:blank and 2K. Executive producers are Cameron MacConomy for about:blank and Strauss Zelnick for Take-Two.

Outraged Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lawrence has the fantastic photo Slumberland featuring Jason Momoa bowing out later this year. He is replaced by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson.

Green recently worked on The Jungle Cruise and Death on the Nile. He is replaced by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Patti Felker.
