The first trailer for Tyler Perry’s highly anticipated Netflix drama The blues of a jazzman is here.

Set in the Deep South of the 1940s, the trailer begins with actors Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer sharing a passionate kiss. The two play star-crossed lovers Bayou and Leanne, whose forbidden love is the backdrop for decades of uncovered secrets and lies.

“It was our first kiss,” Bayou says in the trailer. “There has been nothing so good in my life. You asked me not to tell anyone, but I wanted the world to know.”

Besides Boone and Pfeiffer, the cast also includes Austin Scott, Milauna Jemai Jackson, Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Kario Marcel, Lana Young and Ryan Eggold.

In July, Perry, 52, spoke to PEOPLE about the film, saying, “I wrote it in 1995. It was the first screenplay I wrote. Both characters are just trying to find their own way in the world. .I originally wanted to play the lead role in Bayou, but that was in 1995 – I got old.”

The Hollywood mogul finds himself in a much different life and career than he was when he originally wrote The blues of a jazzmanmaking the project even more personal for Perry.

“I was in Atlanta and I was struggling to make it. I was hungry, I was sleeping on my cousin’s couch, I ended up being kicked out and I found myself homeless. I was trying to get my first play off the ground, and that scenario slipped my mind.” he called back. “I kept it for all these years.”

The trailer features singer-songwriter Ruth B.’s new song “Paper Airplanes,” which she co-wrote with Grammy-winning Terence Blanchard.

The blues of a jazzman is on Netflix on September 23. It will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.
