A poetic celebration of cinema

Rejoice! As our patron saint Nicole Kidman predicted, movies are magical, and the trailer for Empire of Light testifies to this eternal truth. Sam Mendes’ first movie after 1917 features a dream cast, a celebratory cinematic vibe, the stunning visuals of Roger Deakins, and a presumably flawless soundscape from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

You wanted an official synopsis? Sure thing:

“Set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, Empire of Light is a powerful and poignant story about human connection and movie magic. That human connection is between the characters played by Oscar-winning actress Olivia Coleman and BAFTA winner Michael Ward. Other humans in the film include Oscar winner Colin Firth and Toby Jones. Empire of Lightwhich will see theaters for a limited qualifying run on December 9, will play at the BFI London Film Festival on October 12, when we can expect reviews to appear.

There’s no doubt that this is going for Oscar glory. The cast, the prestige behind the camera, and the release date all show high hopes with the Academy. In addition, AMPA I love movies about movies, so this thing was basically built in a lab to please voters. Beyond the hope of rewards, Empire of Light just looks like a gorgeous romance that demands a dark room and a really big screen.
